6 Ways to Prepare Your Home for the New Year

We’re a few weeks into the New Year which means it’s a perfect time to reset your home after the Holidays!⁣⁣

Once all the seasonal decor is down, it is the perfect opportunity to reevaluate the needs of your home and refresh your space for the new year. It is a great practice to set the intention of your home to reflect your most current sentiments and style.

Doing these 6 things will help you make sure you’re setting yourself up for success in the new year and leaving old clutter in 2022!

#1- Do a Deep Clean

When you’re transitioning a space, we ALWAYS recommend a good deep clean before putting things back or bringing in anything new. We all know the corners of our home that don’t get much love because they’re out of sight out of mind, too difficult to get to, or just straight up aren’t urgent enough to make it to the top of the priority list!

We’ve been there so we totally get it. Think of the new year as the perfect opportunity to start fresh! That means cleaning the heavy duty appliances, cabinets, baseboards, and those forbidden places behind the refrigerator and oven 😬.

It might not be the most fun way to celebrate the new year, but trust me, your future self will thank you when they aren’t running into 17 layers of dust and grime a few months down the line.

After the holiday gift-giving season, think of deep cleaning as a little gift for your home 🎁.

#2- De-clutter

Okay okay, I know we recommend de-cluttering year round, but if you’ve still been putting it off, the New Year is the perfect chance to try again!

De-cluttering frequently helps keep your belongings relevant and your home more peaceful. If your belongings are causing you more stress than happiness, it’s better to let go and make room for more important things, whether that is possessions or just more clear space!

Start one room or section at a time and be honest with yourself. Ask yourself these questions to make it easier:

  • Do I like it?

  • Can I still use it? (Or is it broken, the wrong size, have missing parts, etc.)

  • Do I still use it?

  • Do I think I’ll need it in the future?

  • Do I have duplicates of it?

  • Do I need the space for something I care about more?

If something is not being used much but it is hard to let go of because it is in good condition, consider donating it to give it a new life in the home of someone who can appreciate it more.

#3- Rearrange Furniture

New year, new look!

If your space allows it, consider shifting around your furniture for a new look. According to Psychology Today, rearranging the furniture in a room can elevate your mood by bringing a sense of satisfaction, effectiveness, creativity, and comfort.

If you’re wanting a fresh look but don’t want to break the bank, rearranging furniture is the perfect budget-friendly solution to rejuvenate your space.

#4- Purchase New Decor Pieces

In addition to rearranging furniture, adding a few new pieces of decoration to your home can make you feel better about yourself and your space.

This can be as simple and inexpensive as incorporating small accents like candles, wall pictures, mirrors, rugs, vases, and baskets.

Making small swaps like this is also storage-friendly because these items don’t take up much room and can be part of a rotation of seasonal decor. This can help your home feel new without creating an endless stream of new items that end up turning into clutter.

#5- Buy a Plant

Feeling stressed? Get a plant!

Whether you’re a natural gardener or just trying to make your home feel more zen, plants can make an excellent addition to your home. If you’re a first time plant parent, we recommend some low-maintenance options such as aloe, spider plants, snake plants, pothos, and succulents!

Studies show that indoor plants can improve air quality, reduce stress, boost creativity, productivity, focus, and so much more!

Sounds like benefits we could all use a bit more of!

#6- Make a List of Home Needs

It can sometimes be hard to keep track of all the maintenance your home needs over the years so it is best to break it down one year at a time. If you can plan it, you can achieve it!

The new year is the perfect time to create a budget for your house. It’s important to plan for any required upkeep you might expect, but equally important to think about your passion projects and any renovations you’d like to make! As much as a house needs to be functional, it should also reflect your personality to bring you the most happiness possible!

Whether it's jotting down home maintenance projects or just remembering to buy a new set of towels, create lists that will inspire and motivate you to accomplish your home goals this year.
